According to media sources on Sunday, Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, has been extradited from the Czeck Republic. He is suspected of being involved in a murder-for-hire plan against a politician who supports Khalistani.
At the US government’s request, Gupta, 52, was detained in the Czech Republic last year on suspicion of participating in a plan to kill separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. On Monday, he is scheduled to appear before a federal court located in New York.
Gupta is presently being held as a prisoner in the federal Metropolitan Detention Centre located in Brooklyn. His extradition was initially reported by The Washington Post.
Sources close to the situation who want to remain anonymous in order to discuss private legal matters said that Gupta, who had been imprisoned in the Czech Republic, landed in New York last weekend. Extradited defendants often have to show up in court a day after entering the nation, according to the newspaper.
According to US authorities, Gupta paid USD 15,000 in advance to a hitman he hired to assassinate Pannun. They claim it was done by an unidentified Indian government officer.
The extradition of Gupta coincides with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s scheduled travel to New Delhi for the yearly ICET meeting. It is anticipated that Sullivan would bring up the matter with his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval.
India has launched an inquiry into the claims and denied any participation in the matter.
