Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal today introduced the ‘Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana,’ a scheme promising a monthly allowance of ₹18,000 for Hindu temple priests and Sikh gurdwara granthis, contingent on his party’s re-election in Delhi.
“Pujaris and granthis are essential pillars of our society. They have selflessly served the community for generations, often neglecting their own families. This initiative is our way of recognizing and honoring their contributions,” said Mr. Kejriwal.
Currently vying for a fourth consecutive term in the Delhi Assembly, Mr. Kejriwal announced that the scheme’s registration process will commence immediately. He is also scheduled to visit Hanuman Mandir in Connaught Place on Tuesday to oversee the initial phase of the scheme.
This announcement comes as AAP gears up to compete against the BJP and Congress in the upcoming elections. Mr. Kejriwal took a jab at both parties, encouraging them to adopt similar welfare measures in their respective states.
“Pujaris are integral to our lives—be it during celebrations like birthdays or times of mourning, they connect us to God. Yet, we’ve often overlooked their needs. This is the first initiative of its kind in the country. In Delhi, we’ve pioneered transformative changes, such as improving schools and hospitals and introducing free bus travel for women. I hope the BJP and Congress will take inspiration from this and implement similar schemes in their states,” he added.
However, the announcement has stirred controversy. On the same day, imams associated with the Delhi Waqf Board protested outside Mr. Kejriwal’s residence over unpaid salaries. The All India Imam Association alleged that imams had not been paid for 17 months and accused the Delhi government of neglecting their grievances.
