In the nation’s capital’s Uttarakhand Sadan, Justice (Retd) Rituraj Awasthi and Chairperson of the Law Commission, Justice (Retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai, met on Friday to discuss the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Ranjana Prakash Desai, president of the UCC, met with the head of the National Law Commission and briefed him on the UCC’s efforts in Uttarakhand up to that point.
The Committee was established to look at the Uniform Civil Code’s (UCC) implementation options. Its chair is Justice (retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai, a former Supreme Court justice.
“Smt. Ranjana Prakash Desai further stated that work on the Uniform Civil Code’s initial consultation has already been completed in Uttarakhand. On UCC, a lot of work has been done. All of the state’s stakeholders in the uniform civil code have been discussed, according to a government of Uttarakhand official.
She added that the UCC’s subcommittees had discussions about this with other faiths, groups, stakeholders, and sections.
With reference to this, “a meeting has also been held with all the political parties, and their suggestions have been obtained,” Ms. Desai told Rituraj Awasthi.
Ms. Desai added that she hoped everyone would approve of the draught about UCC.
“We continue to hold regular meetings to discuss UCC. During her discussion with Mr. Awasthi, she stated, “We are gaining cooperation in this direction from all the communities.
The state’s adoption of the Uniform Civil Code was announced by the Uttarakhand administration on May 27 of last year.
The five-member committee, chaired by Ms. Desai, was established by the State government to write a proposal for the adoption of the UCC, which is generally concerned with the personal laws of citizens that are applicable to everyone regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, or religion.
Additionally on the panel are retired Justice Permod Kohli, Manu Gaur, a social activist, Shatrughan Singh, a former chief secretary, and Surekha Dangwal, vice chancellor of Doon University.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, had already stated that the committee will turn in its findings by June 30 of this year.
A plan to create and implement personal laws that apply to all Indian residents equally, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity, is known as the Uniform Civil Code. Currently, the religious texts of different communities regulate their personal laws.
The law is covered by Article 44 of the Constitution, which states that the state must work to ensure that citizens have access to a Uniform Civil law across all of India.
Notably, the BJP pledged to implement UCC if it won the 2019 Lok Sabha election by making the commitment in its manifesto.
