In response to the water crisis in the nation’s capital, Delhi’s Water Minister Atishi maintained her indefinite fast, which is entering its second day today. Atishi said via video message that she would not eat anything until Haryana supplies more water for the city’s residents from her “Jal Satyagrah” location in Bhogal, south Delhi. According to her, the goal is to “receive Haryana’s fair portion of water, which will quench the thirst of 28 lakh people.” According to the minister, Haryana provides 613 MGD of the 1005 MGD of water that Delhi receives; but, during the past several weeks, it has only been providing 513 MGD.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was granted bail in the excise policy matter by a trial court judgment, but this was placed on hold by the Delhi High Court on Friday. The Delhi CM is still being held in judicial custody till the HC renders its decision on June 25. The trial court granted AAP supremo bail on Wednesday, June 20, rejecting ED’s request to postpone the bail ruling for 48 hours. Special Judge Niyay Bindu made this decision. After that, the ED had petitioned the Delhi High Court earlier today, contesting Kejriwal’s regular bail.
Kejriwal was detained by the ED three months ago in connection with a money laundering case pertaining to the Delhi excise policy issue that is also being looked into independently by the CBI. He was taken into custody on March 21. Earlier that month, on temporary release from Tihar prison, he had gone to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections and turned himself in on June 2. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had previously claimed that Kejriwal was “directly involved in the formulation” of the now-canceled Delhi excise policy, which was created “considering the favours to be granted to the ‘South Group,'” which the ED claimed was granted unrestricted access, undue favours, stakes in multiple retail zones, and unhindered access to established wholesale businesses in exchange for payments to AAP leaders totaling Rs 100 crore.
