Dignified Farewell For Forgotten Souls: Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal Seeks Support via Milaap to Continue Providing Free Funeral Service

New Delhi, 25th October 2024: In 1995, a heart-wrenching scene at a crematorium forever changed the life of one man. Unable to afford funeral pyre logs, a grieving father was beaten for trying to collect half-burned wood to cremate his son. This moment marked the beginning of a profound mission. That man, shaken to his core, vowed that no one, no matter their financial circumstances, would ever be denied the dignity of their final rites.
Thus began the journey of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal, an organization founded on compassion and driven by the belief that dignity is a fundamental human right, even in death. What started with a few volunteers driving around Delhi to assist families unable to afford cremation services has now grown into a nationwide movement.

“I left everything behind—my successful business, my comfortable life—so I could devote myself to ‘sewa’,” says Jitender Singh Shunty, the founder of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal. “With just a few volunteers, we began answering calls from families in need, providing free funeral vans and ambulances, and even offering mobile mortuary boxes to help families gather for last rites.”

The mission quickly expanded. The organization now provides free ambulance services, having transported over 85,000 patients in emergency situations. Additionally, they have organized more than 200 blood donation camps and have helped cremate over 80,000 individuals.

“When someone in need calls, how can I say no? Every call is a chance to save a life or offer dignity in death.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world stood still, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal didn’t stop. Braving the risks, they cremated over 4,800 bodies, ensuring that no one was denied their final rites, even in the darkest times.

As the demand for these critical services grows, the organization now faces rising costs, making it challenging to meet the needs of every family. Through Milaap’s crowdfunding platform, they are calling for support to ensure that their mission can continue—ensuring that no family is left behind, no matter the time or circumstance.

“We need your help now more than ever,” the founder urges. “Your donations will ensure that no one is denied dignity in life or death.” To support Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal’s mission, please donate today.
