New interdepartmental referral guidelines have been released by the Union Health Ministry to help institutions enhance their accountability, collaboration, and communication. The recommendations emphasise prompt specialised treatment referrals and mandate expert supervision when ending cases. This attempts to improve overall patient care quality in medical facilities and resolve discrepancies.

The Union Health Ministry has implemented new interdepartmental referral rules for hospitals in a historic step meant to address major disparities and improve accountability in the referral process.

The “Guidelines for Inter-Departmental Referral (within hospitals)” require that recommendations be made as soon as possible to the appropriate department whenever a patient requires specialised treatment, diagnostic testing, or consultations that are not covered by the admitting department. Crucially, referrals may only be closed by consultants following a review procedure.

Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, stressed the need of integrated referral mechanisms for providing patients with high-quality care. He pointed out that issues including unclear protocols, insufficient training, and poor communication have a negative effect on patient outcomes. The updated rules further delineate responsibilities among several professional tiers and emphasise the need of uniform referral procedures, guaranteeing residents’ training and continuity of care.
