Rising geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan have cast a shadow over the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently reassessing the situation, with security concerns prompting a possible suspension of the tournament.
The concerns intensified after the 58th league match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was halted midway. The game, held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday, May 8, was called off after just 10.1 overs in the first innings. The abrupt decision followed precautionary air raid alerts issued in the nearby Indian cities of Jammu and Pathankot.
According to a report by Reuters, the BCCI is seriously considering pausing the tournament as tensions continue to rise. The safety of players and spectators has become a priority, especially with several foreign players expressing apprehensions about the developing situation.
Speaking to the media, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said that the league organizers are in close contact with the government and are awaiting official guidance before taking any definitive action regarding the future of IPL 2025.
Meanwhile, news agency PTI reported that a BCCI meeting was convened to address the growing security concerns. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that an emergency meeting had not yet taken place. “The day has just started, we will assess the situation and take a call on the IPL over the course of the day,” he stated.
Despite the uncertainty, Friday’s match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru is expected to proceed as scheduled, barring any further developments.
