Monsoon Hits Delhi: Yellow Alert Issued, Heavy Rain Expected

New Delhi, July 4, 2025 — The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Delhi on June 29 after a short delay. It covered the entire country nine days ahead of the usual July 8 date. The early spread promises an active rainy spell across northern and central India.

Delhi has seen light to moderate rain since the monsoon’s arrival. Overcast skies and cool breezes brought much-needed relief from the heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for July 4 and 5. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely during this period. Heavier rainfall may hit the city on July 6 and 7 due to a fresh western disturbance.

The rain has brought a dip in daytime temperatures. Maximums now hover around 33–34°C, down from recent highs of over 40°C. Humidity remains high, making conditions sticky. The rain has also improved the city’s air quality, shifting it from ‘poor’ to ‘satisfactory’ levels.

Authorities have asked residents to stay alert. Flood-prone zones need extra caution. Civic teams are working on desilting drains and clearing waterlogged areas. Commuters should expect traffic delays and potholes on some roads.

The IMD’s 15-day rain alert suggests that Delhi will see above-average rainfall through mid-July. The showers will help cool the city further. However, heavy downpours could bring flooding, travel delays, and power cuts.
