₹ 700 Crore, 18,000 Women Workers: Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu Housing Unit

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is set to inaugurate a groundbreaking industrial project today, valued at ₹700 crore, designed exclusively for over 18,000 female employees of iPhone manufacturer Foxconn. This event will take place at the SIPCOT Vallam Vadagal industrial estate in Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram district, where the Chief Minister will be joined by Foxconn’s Chief, Young Liu.

Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Industries, TRB Rajaa, spoke to NDTV about the project, stating, “This initiative ensures a safe, secure, and clean environment for the women working in these factories.”

The large-scale housing complex, comprising 13 blocks with 10 floors each, is equipped to house 18,720 workers. The facility also includes essential amenities such as kitchens, dining areas, 24-hour power supply, clean water, and recreational spaces.

This project was initiated in response to recent protests by some female workers over poor working conditions. Additionally, the Minister hinted at more positive developments, mentioning the Chief Minister’s upcoming visit to the United States.

In response to accusations from Tamil Nadu’s opposition leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami about investments leaving the state, the Minister retorted, “Let him wake up first.”
