Russia and India are poised to strengthen their bilateral relations further, with Russian President Vladimir Putin preparing to visit India soon, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. In a televised address, Lavrov confirmed, “Preparations are underway for the President’s visit.”
Lavrov emphasized the reciprocal nature of diplomatic engagements, stating, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first foreign visit to Russia after securing his third consecutive term. Now, it’s our turn.” While confirming that arrangements are being made, he did not specify the exact date or month of the visit.
During his visit to Russia last year, PM Modi had extended an invitation to President Putin for an official visit to India. “President Vladimir Putin has accepted the Indian Prime Minister’s invitation, and plans for his visit are in progress,” Lavrov said.
The announcement came during the conference “Russia and India: Toward a New Bilateral Agenda,” organized by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC).
If the visit materializes, it will mark President Putin’s first trip to India since the Ukraine conflict began in February 2022. The visit is expected to advance his “new economic roadmap” for 2030, with both nations aiming to double bilateral trade to over $100 billion annually.
Additionally, India and Russia have agreed to enhance trade routes, with the Chennai-Vladivostok maritime corridor playing a crucial role in facilitating fresh supplies from Russia to India. Currently, bilateral trade stands at approximately $60 billion per year.
Just last week, Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to reshaping its partnership with New Delhi. Russia seeks to deepen its relationship with India and develop a “special and privileged strategic partnership,” underscoring the growing importance of their alliance.
