‘They may have to even recuse themselves’: Trump lawyers may be forced to stand down

Two of Donald Trump’s personal attorneys, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, who were rewarded with high-ranking positions in the Department of Justice, may face restrictions in their involvement with the ongoing hush money trial overseen by Judge Juan Merchan.

Discussing the matter with host Ana Cabrera, MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin highlighted the ethical dilemmas both attorneys could encounter as they prepare to step into their new roles—Blanche as Deputy Attorney General and Bove as Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General.

Cabrera raised the issue, stating, “Trump has appointed two of his defense lawyers in the hush money case, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, to prominent Justice Department roles. If this trial extends into a future Trump presidency, what could that mean?”

Rubin explained, “This creates a significant conflict of interest for Blanche and Bove. For instance, if they are required to address whether this case should proceed under a Trump administration, their new positions in the Department of Justice could complicate matters. The department might have to act on behalf of the executive branch, which presents a separate set of interests from Trump’s personal legal concerns.”

Rubin further noted, “Given their prior representation of Trump in his personal capacity, Blanche and Bove may need to recuse themselves from any departmental involvement in this case to avoid ethical conflicts.”
