Amritpal Singh, a jailed radical Sikh preacher, would run from Punjab’s
Khadoor Sahib constituency in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, according to a
statement made by his attorney on Wednesday. Amritpal Singh, the leader of the
pro-Khalistan group “Waris Punjab De,” is currently detained under
the National Security Act in the central jail of Dibrugarh, Assam.
On Wednesday, Tarsem Singh, his father, declined to comment on the
situation. He said that he had previously expressed no interest in entering
politics and that he would only talk about Amritpal’s Lok Sabha campaign after
seeing his son on Thursday.
However, his legal counsel, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, stated that he met Amritpal
in Dibrugarh jail on Wednesday and asked him to run in the general elections.
“I saw bhai sahab (Amritpal Singh) in Dibrugarh central jail today, and
during the discussion, I suggested that bhai sahab fight elections from Khadoor
Sahib to become a member of parliament in the interests of ‘Khalsa Panth’. Bhai
sahab accepted my request for Panthic interests… PTI reported Khalsa as
stating, “He will run as an independent candidate.”
