Trump expresses support for Johnson with conditions as rumors swirl: report

Donald Trump has expressed conditional support for Mike Johnson to continue as House Speaker, according to a report.

Speaking with Fox News Digital, the president-elect indicated he would back Johnson’s re-election as GOP leader in the upcoming Congress if Johnson could steer clear of “Democrat traps” and demonstrate “decisive and tough” leadership.

“Any lawmaker who supports a bill that fails to address the Democrats’ debt ceiling quicksand should face a primary challenge and be swiftly replaced,” Trump said.

Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, had previously worked with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on a temporary funding measure to avert a government shutdown. However, that plan unraveled following opposition from Trump’s allies and the president-elect himself, leading some GOP lawmakers to consider seeking a new speaker.

“If Speaker Johnson acts decisively and toughly, dismantling traps laid by the Democrats that could ruin the country economically and otherwise, he will easily retain his position,” Trump added.

The speaker vote is scheduled for January 3. Meanwhile, top Republicans are reportedly considering alternatives, including House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL). However, all three have dismissed speculation about challenging Johnson.

“Whip Emmer supports Speaker Johnson and is committed to his current role,” said Emmer’s spokesperson. Similarly, a source close to Donalds stated, “The congressman has not made any statements about future House leadership.” A representative for Jordan also clarified that the Ohio lawmaker is “not interested in challenging Johnson.”
