Virat Kohli’s Bengaluru Pub Faces Civic Notice Over Fire Safety Issues

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued a notice to cricketer Virat Kohli’s pub, ‘One8 Commune,’ citing alleged violations of fire safety norms. The pub, situated on the sixth floor of Ratnam’s Complex on M.G. Road, near the Chinnaswamy International Cricket Stadium, is reportedly operating without a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Fire Department.

A prior notice was served on November 29 based on complaints by social activists H.M. Venkatesh and Kunigal Narasimhamurthy. However, no response has been received from the establishment. The latest notice, issued by the Health Officer of the Shanthinagar Division of the BBMP, sets a seven-day deadline for clarification. Failure to comply will result in legal action.

Complainant Venkatesh highlighted the broader issue of fire safety violations in Bengaluru, stating, “Many restaurants, bars, and pubs in high-rise buildings lack adequate fire safety measures. Past incidents, like the Carlton Towers fire caused by a short circuit, have led to tragic loss of life, with people jumping from the building in desperation.”

To address such risks, the BBMP and Fire Department have conducted safety audits, identifying several non-compliant buildings. Regulations mandate that licenses not be issued to premises lacking proper fire safety measures, yet violations persist. Venkatesh called for stricter enforcement, particularly at the Ratnam Complex on M.G. Road, urging authorities to act decisively to ensure public safety.

Additionally, the pub had faced legal trouble in July when an FIR was filed for operating beyond the permissible time limit of 1 a.m. Reports indicated the establishment was serving customers at 1:20 a.m., breaching regulations.
