Eris, a fresh Covid variant, was found in Maharashtra

There are signs that the number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, India, is increasing. The most recent strain, EG5.1, often known as Eris, is one of these strains that WHO is closely monitoring. India needs to be cautious because Covid appropriate behaviour has been neglected and vaccine immunity is probably diminishing. The World Health Organisation cautions against describing this as a “rise” in instances without conducting more research. It is necessary to assess the issue for about a week before forming any conclusions. Respiratory diseases frequently rise between June and September.

As a result, we are closely monitoring the circumstance. According to a senior state official, we have only noticed a slight uptick in COVID-19 incidents during the past three to four days.

The COVID variation EG.5.1, often known as Eris, is the cause of the rise in case numbers in both the UK and the US. By the end of July, there were only 70 active cases; by August 6, there were 115. Eris is a sub-strain of Omicron XBB.1.9. On Monday, Maharashtra reported 109 additional cases. Among the cities, Mumbai has the most active occurrences, followed by Pune with 34 and Thane with 25. There is only one active case in each of Raigad, Sangli, Solapur, Satara, and Palghar, according to the most recent statistics.

The COVID variations XBB.1.16 and XBB.2.3 are remain the two most prevalent strains in Maharashtra, according to medical professionals. Health experts have noted that Eris has been present in India since May.In the UK, the COVID variant EG.5.1’s recent emergence has raised health concerns. This subvariant was publicly recognised on July 31 after being linked to a considerable increase in infections.
