Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor’s upcoming film Abir Gulal will not be released in India, government sources have confirmed.

The film, initially scheduled for release on May 9, has been caught in the crosshairs of national outrage following a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead and many others injured. Fawad Khan’s involvement in the project has drawn intense criticism in the wake of the tragedy.

In the aftermath of the attack, calls to boycott the film surfaced almost immediately. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) declared a complete ban on Pakistani artists and pledged to take all necessary steps to prevent Abir Gulal from hitting Indian screens. This stance is reflective of growing tensions and recurring debates around the participation of Pakistani talent in Indian cinema.

Although the Bombay High Court dismissed a broader petition to ban Pakistani artists in 2023, several political groups and film industry bodies continue to oppose such collaborations. The situation escalated further after the teaser for Abir Gulal was released, prompting fierce backlash. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, strongly condemned the film’s release in India, warning that it would not be permitted under any circumstances.

“We will not allow Pakistani actors to work in India,” the MNS stated. “Pakistan continues to support terror activities on its soil, and we cannot permit their artists to gain fame or monetary benefit in our country.”

In response to the Pahalgam attack, Vaani Kapoor shared an emotional message: “I have been numb, at a loss for words since the time I saw the attack on innocent people in Pahalgam. Gutted. Devastated. My prayers are with the families.” Fawad Khan also issued a statement expressing sorrow: “Deeply saddened to hear the news of the heinous attack in Pahalgam. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this horrifying incident, and we pray for strength and healing for their families in this difficult time.”

Adding fuel to the controversy, both lead actors faced criticism for attending a promotional event in Dubai on April 20, just days after the Pahalgam incident. The timing of the event drew sharp disapproval from sections of the public and political groups alike.

Directed by Aarti S. Bagdi, Abir Gulal features a notable cast including Vaani Kapoor, Soni Razdan, and Ridhi Dogra. However, given the current climate, the film’s prospects for an Indian release remain firmly closed.
