Former PM Manmohan Singh passes away at 92

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, renowned as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, passed away in Delhi on Thursday at the age of 92.

Dr. Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) around 8 PM after his health deteriorated due to age-related ailments.

His illustrious political journey began in the early 1970s when he served as an economic advisor to the Government of India. Recognized for his exceptional economic acumen, he was appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in 1982.

Throughout his career, Dr. Singh held several key ministerial roles, most notably as Finance Minister, where his groundbreaking reforms in the 1990s ushered in liberalization and globalization of the Indian economy.

As Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Singh led the nation through a phase of robust economic growth, successfully navigating challenges like the 2008 global financial crisis. His government introduced transformative policies, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Right to Information Act (RTI), empowering millions and fostering greater transparency in governance.

The historic Indo-US nuclear deal was another milestone achieved during his tenure. Former US President Barack Obama famously remarked, “Whenever the Indian Prime Minister speaks, the whole world listens,” highlighting Dr. Singh’s global stature.
